Group participation exercise
Alright, since I know a fair amount of people are reading this thing, I am going to do a survey. I have found that often, people's favorite song ever is pretty uncharacteristic of what they might listen to on a daily basis.
Maybe it means a lot to you because of where you were when you heard it first. Maybe you just think it's awesome. Who knows?
What I want you to do is go into the comments and leave me your favorite song EVER and a short explanation of why. I'd also be interested in learning if it is similar to what you normally like.
I'll start. Bruce Springsteen's Thunder Road.
I was in high school and fitting in pretty much nowhere and everything about that song screams escape. It's all about a guy who ultimately leaves his shitty little town and his shitty little life to be something. I really needed to hear that at the time.
I like rock, but I often lean more towards the indie. Springsteen is not on my list of favorites, yet this song is. Go figure.
OK, now your turn. Please don't let me down.

okay, not sure if these 2 are my most favorite but at time they were. One is Danger Zone by Kenny Logins from Top Gun and the other one was Ride like the Wind by Christopher Cross.
Almost every time I heard these songs they made me feel better, especially after a big argument with my mother. I just wanted to get in a car and go away from it all.I would forget about everyone around me and in my mind go to a far away place.
When the song plays on the radio, I smile and if Dennis isn't in the car turn it way, way up.
I couldn't let you down son........
Pictures of You by the Cure. If you've listened to it you know why. And this is the type of music I normally listen to.
Thank you both.
And yes, Ryan. I totally get it.
I hate this question but i don't whant to let you down so RIGHT NOW I'd say "The Wind" by Cat Stevens. It’s about as pure and honest and beautiful as a song can aspire to be. And all under 2 minutes. There are other Cat Steven songs I like but I wouldn’t consider myself a die hard fan of him or the whole singer songwriter genre. There you go. This is of course subject to change based upon my mood and the time of day.
I agree that it is most definitely an awesome song. But strangely, Jennifer and I have both held our ultimate best song ever since high school.
I may not listen to Thunder Road often, but it really means something when I do.
The style of music I like may be transitory. Trends and all that. But that one song always stays the same.
Yeah I have a few songs like that but it has more to do with the memories attached to them than the actual song. In fact there are some songs I hate and know are terrible but still take me back to a certain place and time (Ace of Base's "I Saw the Sign", don't ask). So those songs aren't really my favorite but just have the most personal crap attached to them. I almost think it's more impressive if a song can grab you and stay with you without having any memory attached to them. That's when you know it's the song you love and not the memories.
U2's With Or Without You. This is how I feel about my wife and daughter. I always liked this song cause it stirs a lot of emotions in me everytime I listen to it. A close second is U2's One, the lyrics speak for it self. I like a variety of music, but rock is the main staple of my music listening diet.
Shaun, while I agree that it is harder for a song to be valued based on its merits, there's a lot to be said for the emotional attachment. I doubt you like The Sign the way I like Thunder Road. It doesn't have to be like an event or where you were, though those help. What I am referring to though is when a song just totally spoke to you. It was exactly what you needed to hear when you needed to hear it and as a result, it sticks with you to this day.
I have three
Mr. Roboto by Styx and Fat Bottom Girls by Queen and Stuck by Limpbizkit...
All three are from different summers in my life that have really kicked ass...and everytime I hear those songs the memories come flooding back.
Those are all over the map. But excellent examples of how music can bring you right back.
You get a B+
